Wesley Clark: State's energy future is biofuels
Wesley K. Clark | April 20, 2009 | Orlando Sentinel
It's precisely during times of crisis that the best of America emerges. I have found, through my travels all over the globe, that it is the resiliency of the American people during hard times that is our defining characteristic. As we face the challenges of high unemployment, a warming climate and unstable regimes on whom we depend for oil, I believe we can meet these challenges by remaining undaunted in the face of adversity and applying American ingenuity to find solutions.
Last month, a group I'm part of, Growth Energy, proposed one such solution by submitting a green jobs waiver to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which would increase the blend of ethanol in our fuel supply up to 15 percent — creating jobs, boosting our energy independence and reducing greenhouse-gas emissions. Right now, ethanol is capped at 10 percent of the fuel supply.
When the Florida Legislature passed the comprehensive energy bill unanimously last year requiring 10 percent of Florida's fuel to come from ethanol, it unleashed the imagination of Florida's entrepreneurs. Companies have proposed making ethanol from everything from sugar cane, switchgrass, sorghum and even orange peels that would, otherwise, be wasted.

General Wesley Clark on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer
April 6, 2009
Transcript by Reg NYC
Wolf Blitzer: So, can the United States and its allies actually win the war in Afghanistan. Joining us now from Little Rock is the retired U.S. Army General Wesley Clark, the former NATO Supreme Allied Commander. A lot of the experts who know Afghanistan well, General Clark as you well know, say this is really not a winnable situation.
GENERAL WESLEY CLARK: Well, I think that's right, and I think- I do- I think they do say that. I think it's a very tough situation, but our objectives are we're principally there to go after Osama Bin Laden and the international terrorist movement that he has led and inspired. And the rest of it is what we can do, the most we can do to help the people of Afghanistan, and of course we want to help stabilize the situation on Pakistan, a nation 170 million armed with nuclear weapons. So, there's a three-part effort, but the winning part is breaking the back of the terrorist organization.

I wanted to give you a quick update on the open seat election in New York's 20th Congressional district. Earlier this month I wrote to you about the special election and asked you to help Democrat Scott Murphy in his uphill battle to defeat Jim Tedisco.
Thanks to your support, Scott is on the verge of winning. After starting off more than 21 points down, Scott now leads by 65 votes, but the race is still too-close-to-call. Unfortunately, even before the polls closed, his opponents filed a lawsuit to slow down the vote count.
As we've seen with Al Franken in Minnesota, this election fight will likely continue in the courts. Scott's campaign will now need the resources to wage this legal battle.
You helped Scott get here, and I can't thank you enough.
