General Wesley Clark's Boys and Girls Club Message
July 27, 2009 | KTHV-DT | Craig O'Neill
Back in the 50's, a bushy headed, smallish kid, would swim at the Boys Club on Scott Street, He would go on to become the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, but General Wesley Clark would never forget his roots.
Back in the 50's, the Little Rock Boys Club was located on Scott Street in downtown Little Rock. There were no high school swimming programs then, so if a teen wanted to excel in that sport, the Boys Club was the first choice. This was how General Wesley Clark got his start.
He credits the Boys Club for contributing to his development that would lead him to his decorated military career. He would become the Supreme Allied Commander for NATO in the Balkans. He is credited with restoring peace in Kosovo under the Clinton Administration. After retiring from the military he became a contributor to CNN's war coverage. In 2004 he made a run for the Presidency.
Now, he has returned to the Boys Club to lend his name to a nationwide campaign simply entitled: "Be Brave." The message is that a commitment to a career takes courage and that young people can look to the Boys and Girls Clubs for inspration and a strong foundation.
There are currently over 6,000 kids being served at the eight clubs in Central Arkansas.
